Airport operator BAA has confirmed the appointment of Nick Barton as Stansted’s managing director. Mr Barton has been performing the role on an interim basis since the departure of former boss David Johnston at the end of November. He has six years experience at the west Essex hub, most recently as commercial and development director.

Police at Stansted Airport have helped to raise nearly £400 for Children in Need with home-made treats that sold like hot cakes. Cakes baked by officers and staff at the airport police station went on sale on Friday at a stall set up in the atrium in Enterprise House.

Airport and airline staff based at the office block lapped up the cakes and also bought tickets for a range of tombola prizes donated by police staff and businesses at Stansted. The coalition government is to continue with high-speed rail plans that will link London and Heathrow Airport. Transport secretary Phillip Hammond announced in a speech at the Conservative party conference that a preferred option for the routes has already been identified. Plans are for the route to extend from London to Birmingham, then form a Y shape with one branch going towards Manchester and the other travelling via Leeds.

Monarch Airlines will be launching a new service between Gatwick Airport and Calabria in Italy next summer. Services will run each Saturday throughout the peak summer season from the London travel hub to Lemezia airport, with prices starting from £219 return. The Italian region is home to a number of cultural and historic attractions, left from the time it was occupied by the Greeks, as well as stunning coastlines and the Sila national park.

Tim Jeans, managing director of Monarch Airlines, said that there has been an increase in demand for flights to the region with other tour operators this year and the airline is "delighted" to be offering the new schedule. "The service will operate from Gatwick for summer 2011, but if demand continues to grow as expected, services will expand to operate from other bases in the future," he added.

Last month, the airline announced that it has extended its online service to allow holidaymakers to check in for their flights between 18 days and four-and-a-half hours before travelling.

Free transport of ski equipment will also be offered on the route. Titus Johnson, Air Berlin country manager for the UK and Ireland, said: "Whether visiting Salzburg's old town, skiing in the Alps or visiting the birthplace of Mozart, Air Berlin's passengers can expect a full, quality service combined with attractive prices."

Tickets are on sale from £34 one way including taxes and passengers will be provided with 20kg of luggage allowance, allocated seating, and a complimentary sandwich and soft drink. Air Berlin also provides direct routes from Stansted Airport to Dusseldorf, Nuremburg, Munster and Hanover.

The airport recently achieved re-accreditation for the ‘Fit for Business Recognition’ and has officially been branded a Fit for Business certified workplace.

FFB and LLA have worked together to nominate a team of ‘Workplace Champions’. It is the responsibility of the ‘Champions’ to lead and deliver the FFB programme within the workplace.  FFB then works with these Champions to offer tailored one-to-one support, training days, a dedicated support helpline and offers an online toolkit of resources at the Champions’ disposal.
